Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

1) Economic Trend: Research and Development Funding Increase for Canadian Space Industry
http://spacenews.com/canada-doles-out-rd-dollars-while-new-space-strategy-remains-overdue/
This article suggests that there will be an increased interest and support for the Canadian space industry because the Canadian government is expecting to provide $20 million to companies and universities. The customers of this opportunity will be local Canadian schools and startups wanting to be involved in new space innovation. This opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because the industry is highly competitive and the breakthroughs take a lot of time and money to accomplish. I identified this opportunity because I have been a space advocate for a number of years and know how important it is to have funding for research.

2) Regulatory change: New Policy Directive Implements Commercial Space Regulatory Reforms
http://spacenews.com/new-policy-directive-implements-commercial-space-regulatory-reforms/
The Space Policy Directive 2 was signed by President Donald Trump and seeks to make it easier for US space companies to conduct in launch and remote sensing regulations, export control, and earning frequent access to space.  The most likely customer is private space companies to gain advantage of the governments opportunity of power to gain access to government facilities.  The opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because it depends on the market for private space travel and having people interested in going to space. I formed my belief based on my friends experiences for working for SpaceX, a private space company, and facing the challenges of government regulation that delay innovation and progress.

3) Economic trend: Huge sales of defense articles to Asia-Pacific as tensions arise with North Korea

The United States has sold $14.4 billion of defense articles, including aircraft parts, military electronics, launch vehicles, spacecraft systems, etc. to Japan and South Korea. The most likely customers for this economic surge of defense spending are to democratic nations in Asia that are wanting to avoid conflict with North Korea. The opportunity is easy because the Asian governments are purchasing the technology from American companies  and departments. I formed my belief based on my research on the current political situation and witnessing Kim Jong Un conduct six nuclear tests within the past year.

4) Regulatory change: Artificial intelligence has changed the views on society
http://spacenews.com/nga-official-artificial-intelligence-is-changing-everything-we-need-a-different-mentality/
The military and tech sector are progressing the ability for artificial intelligence to know more about everything than ever before based off learning algorithms and technologies such as surveillance and image collection. The customers for this is everyone because systems, computer electronic, and mechanical are becoming smarter and smarter and may find there way into every niche of human life. The regulation is already have and quick because computers are constantly learning new things and billions of data information are stored in systems every day. I formed this belief because I am a millenial and have been exposed to how rapidly technology and innovation can change in a mtter of a few years and how dramatically different systems really are from their predecessors.

  1. These are all very interesting. Space exploration has always interested me, but I don’t follow it as close as I use to. I do agree that it must be hard to find breakthroughs because it is very expensive to fund. Since NASA stopped receiving government, funding, mainly private businesses have stepped up and taken over the main research in space exploration. Your second summarization about the regulatory change was interesting because I don’t follow it much, I didn’t realize there was so many regulations fighting against the private businesses working towards space travel.

  2. Hi Aaron,
I found the first topic interesting because I think involving schools and organizations in space research and exploration can bring positive change. It could bring more interest and exposure to the field, all while spreading knowledge and making people more informed. I also liked the article on how AI has changed our views of technology. I agree that as Millenials, we are able to see how quickly technology can change.
